W2 is a much-anticipated community media arts facility opening this spring and summer at the landmark Woodward’s redevelopment in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Five years in the planning, W2 will open a W2 Cafe, community TV and radio station, media labs and community meeting spaces.
The Centre’s objectives are to produce and present new works of artistic significance and social benefit; to empower individuals and communities; and to engage with technology and interdisciplinary artists as producers rather than consumers. Emphasis will be placed on cross-cultural sharing, artistic and social outcomes, as well as the quality of process.

Description: |
As the world arrives for the Olympics, and with construction delays with the Woodward’s heritage building, W2 will operate across the street as the W2 Culture + Media House. This is a 13,000sq ft multi-level social media and arts hub hosting 300-500 journalists, bloggers, and artists from February 1-28, 2010. It’s the media centre for folks who can’t get accredited by VANOC at the Trade & Convention Centre or by the BC government at the Robson Square BCIMC.
Our temporary location at 112 West Hastings will be transformed into a 24 hour/day space for independent local & international journalists and bloggers to share their perspectives on the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver with the world. It will also include a free public access cultural space exhibitions during the day with morning press briefings, workshops and conferences, and transformed at night to present a cross-section of Vancouver’s diverse culture scenes for live ticketed receptions and events.
We are seeking a strong crew of Broadcast volunteers to support all aspects of the House.
Broadcast Crew responsibilities:
-coordinate the overall broadcast operations for the W2 Culture + Media House
-responsible for the packaging / production of up to 4 hours of content each day from February 12-28 for use on W2.tv and other media outlets
-coordinate and oversee media production crew including scheduling, training and support
-attendance at daily team meetings
Available Broadcast Crew volunteer positions:(Time Commitment 16-30+ hours)
*IT Director: co-ordinate and manage technical and logistics aspects of Web-Channel produciton, live streaming, 24/7 streaming, and the technical side of T.V./Web day-day production, Web design, trouble shooting etc.
*Technical Director: troubleshoot the technical aspect of Web-Channel produciton, live streaming, 24/7 streaming, and the technical side of T.V./Web day-day production.
*Technical Assistant: assist with the technical aspect of Web-Channel produciton, live streaming, 24/7 streaming, and the technical side of T.V./Web day-day production.
*Webmaster: To help with the tech support and the logistics of the developing W2 Web Channel.
*Web-designer: To help with the artistic design and coherence of the W2 Channel site
*Web-developer: Help Develop the main frame W2 Channel website
*Traffic Coordinator: To work with Drop Box manager and production co-ordinator in bringing in coherently submissions from outside partnered media clusters into W2 Web channel.
*Production Editor: To help build a coherent daily programming flow for the W2 media channel.
*Drop Box Manager: To manage and classify by themes, content, length and other properties, the material being submitted to W2 Web channel, working in conjunction with the production team.
*Production Coordinator: to help coordinate people, events, shooting teams, gear and other elements of production, help out in a daily basis with final show for 24 hr stream web channel.
*Writers: Individuals with writing skills able to write documentary material for shooting, blog on W2 site, as well as content for local media (The Tyee, civil liberties watch Website, Red Rent, Georgia Straigh, CBC, 24 hrs, CBC... etc.).
*4 Researchers / Interviewers: Helping with contacting and arranging shooting times for interviews, access to events and media passes, doing interviews and helping during shooting times with wiring individuals, assisting camera person, conducting in-depth critical interviews.
*2 Reporters: 2 motivated individuals able to report in front of camera, do off-voice and narrative recordings, be able to present events coherently, collaboratively and in depth.
*4 Videographers: Building Coverage footage of press-conferences, interviews, artist’s in residence.
*4 FCP Editors: Editing, building sequences, packaging W2 Material, Interviews, press conferences,special events, profiles and other shows (usually 5-10 mins shows a day! / each).
*Motion Graphic / Animators: individuals able to create Animated content for W2, helping with creative animated designs for website and campaigns.
*Social Media Supervisor: to help keep our online presence fresh and updated on our site, facebook, twitter, flickr, wherever. hoping to find someone who is already familiar with this stuff and can hit the ground running.
