Description: |
We offer complex care, an Addictions Recovery Program, and assisted living services to a population of close to 200 Vancouver Downtown Eastside residents. The majority of our residents are seniors, however we also serve a number of younger individuals.
The Gardener will develop and run our facility's Gardening Program. He/she will also help to identify sources of donated plants and supplies on an ongoing basis.
Many of our residents have lived in the Downtown Eastside and may have mental and physical health problems, backgrounds of addiction and poverty, and few family or friends. The aim of this role is to offer a variety of plant-related activities that will connect residents to the natural world, and to beautify and enrich their urban living environment throughout the year.
Bring your creativity! We would like to bring many residents' gardening memories back, and offer opportunities for them to create and nurture in spite of physical constraints, and/or mental health issues.
Developing resident-focused gardening opportunities to make individual residents happy (such as growing a favourite vegetable or flower), the Gardener will also create plant-related general interest (eg: by planting a sunflower garden, or growing heritage runner beans).
Activities such as plant propagation (simple plants such as sansiveria/African violets/spider plant) will produce specimens for residents' rooms, offering an avenue for one-on-one interaction and discussion about plants and gardening.
Later, the Gardening program could offer some competitions (eg: largest tomato, etc), or produce could be used in related art & craft projects as available.
Regular activities will include taking care of our existing indoor plants, and seasonal activities will include planning, planting and caring for exterior planters on our patios.
